Here’s another video! This one is from the day of the tournament, August 16. We start off with a debate about where to eat (as usual), ride the train to SBO and then I include some footage from the finals. There is no match footage though, because I figured the SBO people probably wouldn’t like that. But you get a taste of what it was like to actually be there.
Okay so I’m back in the states now. What an amazing trip! I’m sorry for the lack of updates, but the trip was a whirlwind adventure and I didn’t have time to give these updates the time they deserve. But I’m back now so I can do it.
Anyways, enjoy the video, here are a few more pics:
Today was another crazy day. We got a late start because everyone was still sleeping until mid-afternoon because we were out so late at Sakura last night. It’s amazing how the Japanese players can play all night at seemingly their peak level. When I left this morning a little after 5AM, the arcade was still packed with plenty of players.
We started off by going to find something to eat. We walked down the street from our hotel to a marketplace with a bunch of shops, restaurants, arcades, and pachinko spots. We ate at this random curry house. Again we ordered from the vending machine and the food was brought to us in about 3 minutes. AMAZING! The curry was great and the pork was really tender. Grand total: 650 yen or about $6.50.
At Sakura there was a random 2v2 today which we all played in. Unfortunately, due to luck or whatever, this random 2v2 felt a lot like home. Me and Kai were paired up, as were Pyro and Ken I. To top it all off, we had to play them in the first round and lost.
A blue Urien player whose name I didn’t count won the tournament and OCV’d Ino’s team for the win. This dude is my new Urien hero. He plays just like me (or rather I should say I play just like him) except obviously way better.
Also spotted at Sakura was what I’m going to call the Wall of Champions. Nuki and Tokido’s Evo 2008 badges are on display, as well as Nuki’s trophy for winning 3s this year. That was pretty cool to see.
After the tournament, we left to find a ramen house that was recommended to us by Ino. He said it was 300 meters down the street, but we ended up walking for about 20 minutes past a Denny’s before turning back. We ended up at a ramen house that was basically next door. The soup was very oily and I think it came with 4 really thick pieces of chashu. It was awesome!
We stayed again until 5AM and now we’re getting ready to go eat and then go to a 5v5 tourney at Club Sega here in Shinjuku.
First of all, thank you again to everyone who was kind enough to donate to help get us here. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and so I wanted to try to blog about it as much as possible because you guys deserve to see what it’s like over here since you helped get us here.
Here is the roll call of who is traveling with me:
Kai
Pyrolee
Ken I
5 Star
Ed Ma
So today is technically day 2, but it seems like one long day still. We left LAX at 1:10PM and arrived in Japan a little before 4PM. The flight was about 12 hours, but honestly wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. We spent some time in the airport here and had to meet up with Fubarduck because he is also here, but isn’t staying with us and 5 Star because he wasn’t on the same flight. We took the express train to Shinjuku where we’re staying and that took about an hour and a half.
Once we got here, it was a mission finding our hotel, but it was worth it when we did because the place is really nice! Ed and I went to eat at this ramen place that is basically next door and that was awesome! The noodles were a lot thicker than I’m used to and the soup was really creamy. The chashu (pork) melts in your mouth! So good!
After that, we took the train to Sakura arcade where we saw Ino, Tokido, Kindevu and Nuki! That was pretty cool. We got some games in with them, as well as the European and Hong Kong teams. We played until about 5:30AM and then went to this restaurant where you put money into what looks like a vending machine and press a button with a picture of what you want. Then you give the guy the little ticket and he brings you your food. Seems like the way of the future to me.
Got back to the room about an hour later and passed out. Now it’s 12:30PM and everyone else is still sleeping. More to come soon!
