Here it is! We have part 1 of LA Riots available for download. It’s an hour and 20 minutes long and part two will be out shortly. If you’re wondering why it takes so long it’s because we had to edit and fix a few things in the editing room that we got wrong during the original live broadcast. Also, I’m interested in hearing what you guys think of the release format because we can try it different ways.

Distribution Methods and Naming Conventions
I’m trying out different distribution methods for LA Riots. The first is using Bit Torrent to distribute via MiniNova for free and the second is direct downloads via Hotfile. The advantages of distributing through Bit Torrent and MiniNova are:
- no bandwidth costs
- faster download speeds
- visibility to a new audience
The disadvantages of Bit Torrent are:
- some ISPs throttle Bit Torrent downloads
- sub-optimal download speeds if not configured properly
- requires additional software to download i.e. uTorrent (Windows), Transmission (OS X)
The advantages of distributing through Hotfile are:
- no bandwidth costs for the distributor
- no Bit Torrent knowledge necessary for the downloader
- faster download speeds for premium users
The disadvantages of distributing through Hotfile:
- slower downloads (capped at 150k/s) for free users
- one download at a time for free users
So that’s the difference. These are the two methods with which we are able to distribute high quality videos for free at no cost to the downloader. Other distribution options include DVDs and charging per download, both of which may be additional options in the future. For now, these seem to be the best methods for distributing free downloads without having to pay for additional bandwidth.
Why Not Just Use YouTube?
YouTube is great for discovering new videos and watching short tutorial/combo videos, but not so good for distributing longer videos. The goal of LA Riots was to produce a tournament with a run time that people will actually watch (sorry, I refuse to believe that anybody watches all 20 hours of a 2-day tournament). Due to the 10 minute length limit, YouTube is not the best place to distribute long videos. Yes, we can cut them up into 10 minute segments, but I want people to have the option to download the videos in a format they can store on their hard drive (h.264) or take with them on their portable devices (iPhone/iPod format).
If people are downloading the videos and adding them to their iTunes/Winamp/whatever library, I feel like they have more staying power and more value because they’ll be treated with the same respect as MP3s and downloaded movies. In addition, these videos that we are putting out have a fair amount of production effort put into them and so I would rather they be distributed as they were meant to be seen (in one big chunk or sitting, not in 10 minute bites).
Do you prefer:
- one large file release (total runtime is 2hrs30min approximately at about 2GB file size)
- two releases of halves (this part is 871mb, part 2 should be about 950mb)
- weekly releases of approximately 40 minute files
- one large release of the matches cut into individual files
I’m leaning toward the last option so that we would have the files named as such:
gootecks_Coin-Op_TV_Evo_Energy-LA_Riots-120509 (folder name)
- 00-gootecks_Coin-Op_TV_Evo_Energy-LA_Riots-120509.nfo
- 00-gootecks_Coin-Op_TV_Evo_Energy-LA_Riots-120509.m3u
- 00-gootecks_Coin-Op_TV_Evo_Energy-LA_Riots-120509.sfv
- 01-Intro.m4v
- 02-Keno_(Balrog)_vs_Shizza_(Chun_Li)-wb.m4v
- 03-Kai_(El_Fuerte)_vs_ComboJack_(Sagat)-wb.m4v
- 04-Ken_I_(Akuma)_vs_Combofiend_(Abel)-wb.m4v
- 05-gootecks_(Balrog)_vs_Mike_Ross_(Honda_Zangief)-wb.m4v
- etc etc
WB stands for Winners’ Bracket and LB would stand for Losers’ Bracket.
The naming convention is derived from scene MP3 releases, which I believe are organized and packaged very efficiently and effectively. The reason for splitting up the matches is very simple. I’m viewing this event as a “video album” where each track is an individual match, rather than putting out one long album without tracks. This way you can load them into iTunes, Winamp or whatever you use to watch your videos and be able to transfer them to your portable devices easier.
Of course this is probably going to have to wait until LA Riots II (January 16th, 2010 BTW) or at least until part 2 is finished.
Line-Up
- Keno (Balrog) vs. Shizza (Chun Li)
- Kai (El Fuerte) vs. ComboJack (Sagat)
- Ken I (Akuma) vs. Combofiend (Abel)
- gootecks (Balrog) vs. Mike Ross (E. Honda/Zangief)
- Kai (El Fuerte) vs. Shizza (Chun Li)
- Combofiend (Abel) vs. Mike Ross (Zangief)
- ComboJack (Sagat) vs. Keno (Balrog)

I prefer either one big chunk or two halves, but that’s only because I intend to watch these videos on my PC. I would imagine that iPhone users would prefer to have the videos sliced up.
The torrent was very fast for me, thanks for uploading this!
Two halves is fine for pc, split up on iphone would be very appreciated. I love all the work you guys are doing, especially the iphone stuff
, keep it up.
Thanks for the uploads! Have you tired http://www.mediafire.com? I find it has ace DL speeds and you don’t have to wait 60 seconds for not agreeing with extortion.
watching this on PC and two halves is fine, torrent speed is great too. great work gootecks and gang!
I love the production on this, can’t wait to see the second half.
megaupload would be a better choice than hotfile
or sharebee which uploads to many different file hosting services
Are you able to chop up the files a BIT and put them on itunes for download? I say a bit because I had the msot recent batman film on my iphone as one file, and at times it would just stop playing, I can only assume due to the filesize. Anyway if it were also available via itunes I think that would be great. I could watch them on the bus to work etc.
thanx bro, one big hd file is always better!
but a more common format would be even better, mov doesn’t play on ps3 or xbox360!
Keep up the good work!
As Abdelilah said, it would be great to have it in another format for 360 and ps3 users, but I’m happy just to get to see this again.
Keep up the good work!
I downloaded and watched this last night – fantastic work. This was akin to a televised sports event and struck me as the beginnings of something very cool provided you guys keep it up. It was great seeing familiar faces drop their opinions by way of interviews and also seeing them play with the PIP view.
It would be great if those interviewing the players after matches perhaps understood the game a little better, though this kind of knowledge will come with time and experience anyways.
In short, awesome work and thanks to the organisers, players and presenters for putting this together! I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I’m looking forward to part II
thank you, thank you for offering one file downloads of tournaments. of everyone who records and offers gameplay video, you actually get it right! i think you should continue to use both bittorrent and download hosting services, why just one? if you do cut the file into individual matches, please still include an option to download a full zipped folder.
Please use AVI format next time. It’s the most widely used, distributed, easy format out there for sub HD releases. I know you’re thinking about MKV, please don’t.
I don’t mind having it split into two files, as long as you release both at the same time. I want to see the rest of it! 40 mins released weekly means I lose interest.
The torrent was great because so many people were seeding/downloading. If we can keep that up then torrents are the best way.
Personally Megaupload is the best free download site for me; I get much better speeds there (550 kb/s avg.) compared to Hotfile, Storage.to, Rapidshare, Depositfiles etc etc. I know this varies from connection to connection, but I am in LA.
I want 2 files, not a giant one. I can’t wait for this to be on my iPod
I’d actually prefer a pack with each match as its own separate file. One big file is good, but honestly I don’t want to watch every match – Sagat is super boring to watch vs every other popular character.
One big file is fine – I can just scrub through the timeline to find the matches I am interested in, but chapters in one file, or separate files would be my choice.
Also, bittorrent is the way to go for sure.
It`s great to see that the street fighter community is growing really fast. I see a lot of tournaments going in US and just by broadcast to the rest of the world give us the inspiration the play even further. I would like to thank gootecks for take the fight community to another level and I hope you keep up the good job you`ve been doing. Thanks to all those players out there that try a lot to stay on top of the japanese and give us those amazing videos. Belive in what you doing that people will start following. I hope that Brazil follow that.
Thank you again.
@James
Getting them on iTunes is a whole other struggle. All you have to do is drag them into iTunes (the iPhone version i mean).
@Chad
Thanks for the feedback, but you’re underestimating the amount of time it takes to put these out. Remember we are putting these out for free so the editing and production is done when there is time. Of course I would have loved to put the whole thing out, but it just wasn’t feasible right now due to time constraints and limited resources. Hotfile is capped at 250k/s without a premium account, so that’s why it’s slower.
@Eddie
Thanks for the kind words, it’s Brazil’s turn now!
Sup gootecks, awesome work bro i’ll pwn you next tourney though make sure to record that an up it too.
-Alex
it is great to see tournament play like this.
thanks a lot!
this video is superior.. the way the profiling is done, and not much messing around.. well presented & commented.
I probably should have put this in my first comment, but thanks for doing this Gootecks. I do understand the time it takes to put something like this together.
One more request for future events: even more trash talking.
Is part 2 gonna be available soon?
I’d like to say that the production of this is really high quality, and you guys did a great job. Now if only we could get streamed events online like Evo etc. at this quality haha
Really enjoyed part one, nice production.
There is a big community in Australia that loves watching all the good work you guys do over there (and is quite jealous). Keep it up!
um, not sure if i’m missing something, but is part 2 out yet? i can’t find it…
Anw i can’t wait for the second part !
Thank you for all this job gootecks.
I really like the production on these and yea you and your peoples(whoever has helped gootecks behind the scenes this thank you is for you guys too) have done the most for the community this year with the tournaments ,streams, and the torrents.I know your busy but can we have part 2 before the next riots?
Can’t wait for Part 2.
Hey their gootecks just wondering if U have a Myspace page well if U do hit me up on EastLos805 PEACE
This tournament has got to have one of the best commentary since DJswoozie vs. DJWheat HAHA
Happy New Year! When are you going to release part 2? I see LA Riots II is in the near future…just saying. Thanks!
hey gootecks is it possible for you to use the mp4 format instead of m4v?
There are other portable media players out there other then iphone. I have an android phone and I would love to have these on the go. I’m pretty sure mp4 works flawlessly with ipods so that shouldn’t slow you down. Mp4 is just more universal then m4v. Just a thought, keep up the great work
@dommafia
.m4v and .mp4 are interchangeable. rename the extension and it should be good to go.
Any news on the second part of LA Riots?
