This is a video from West Coast Warzone SF4 Top 8 featuring San Diego’s Gen-master Yeb vs. Gamestop SF4 National Top 16 Finalist fLoE. The winner of this match went on to fight SoCal’s rising Dhalsim star, UTJ. It’s a noteworthy match because as far as I know, this is the first time a Gen player has made a big splash in a major tournament. Yeb definitely made a name for himself as one of San Diego’s best. Gen is not a widely used character in the SF4 community due to…well, the fact that he’s Gen.
As for the other videos, they’re coming along nicely, due to the editing efforts of Cami. Those will be posted on West Coast Warzone Videos within the next few days so please sign up for the email list to get notified when they’re released. They will be available for download in H264 and iPhone format. If you’re subscribed to my podcast, then you’ll have gotten this video in iPhone format. Whee!
THESE ARE NOT BIG DISCOVERIES! If you’re a Sagat player, I’m sure you know all of these, so this article is not for you. Recently because I’ve been training students, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to learn new characters from scratch. I thought to myself, “if I were trying to learn a new character, what would be the most systematic way to do it?”
That’s not really what this post is about though, but one of the things that I did think about in terms of character mastery was that you should at least be able to go through all of said character’s combos in Trial Mode. Not to say that all of the combos that Trial Mode makes you do are good or useful, just that if you have mastered your character’s execution, you should be able to do most of them relatively easily.
So I went through Trial Mode with Sagat (or at least tried to until I got to Stage 4 on Trial Mode Hard lol) and realized that even though I’ve played a million of them, there was still a lot to learn about him and I realized some of it while playingTrial Mode.
Here are the Top 8 Street Fighter 4 singles matches from East Coast Throwdown this past weekend courtesy of DarkSydePhil. Mike Ross and I had to play each other unfortunately, due to the way the brackets turned out.
Good games to him, sabin, and iloveu and congrats to Marn for winning! Marn, iloveu and sabin are all on the Northeast Evo 5v5 team so make sure you check these guys out because they are some of the East Coast’s finest. Also make sure you check out the matches with Fascinating, who is a relative newcomer to the competitive Street Fighter world and one of Chinatown Fair’s (NY) best players and got 3rd place.
I’m finally back at home now from my extended stay in New York. Thanks again to Triforce, Justin Wong and Empire Arcadia for having me! It was a crazy trip that was topped off with a weekend in New Jersey for East Coast Throwdown.
DarkSydePhil took a lot of video so for those of you who weren’t watching the live stream last night, you’re in luck! Really glad to have footage from this event because there were some really amazing matches.
The winners of each of these matches go on to Top 8. For those wondering, Mike Ross was put into losers first round by Moose and I was put into losers third round (I think) by Dr. Chaos.
All the way from New York, we have a surprise guest, Justin Wong! Justin was in town for the E For All Expo for a canned food drive to help the needy during the holiday season. We recorded in the alley of Denjin Arcade, so I’m apologizing in advance for the mediocre sound quality. Also the yelling in the background was everyone playing 3s that day. This show is mostly Street Fighter 4, so for those of you clamoring for more SF4 stuff, here it is courtesy of one of the best players in the world. Anyways, enjoy!
Justin’s recent accomplishments:
Got 2nd in 3s at Evo 2008 with Chun Li
Won MVC2 at Evo 2008
Qualified to go to Japan for SBO 2008 in 3s and ST
